Welcome to another edition of the American Dairymen Podcast. Just ahead we have Gale McKinney, he is the Publisher of American Dairymen, and he sits down with Elle TerHaar with Repro-Scan Technologies.
Growing up in Colorado and now living in Iowa, Ellie brings a deep agricultural background to her role. Along with her husband and in-laws, she also raises Charolais bulls on their family farm, maintaining a herd of 20-25 bulls and using their cattle as a research and training resource. Repro Scan was founded in 2008 by two bovine practitioners in Alberta, Canada, with the goal of developing better ultrasound technologies for livestock. The company has grown from its Canadian roots to become a small but impactful organization focused on providing simple, durable, and affordable veterinary ultrasound equipment. The interview delved into the technical aspects of ultrasound technology, explaining how sound waves work to create images and the importance of different probe types for various agricultural applications. Ellie highlighted the company’s signature extension arm technology, which reduces physical strain on veterinarians and minimizes stress for animals during pregnancy checks. While primarily serving the cattle industry, Repro Scan has expanded to support other livestock sectors, including dairy goats, sheep, and even exotic animals like chickens and hedgehogs. The company emphasizes comprehensive training and support for veterinarians, offering continuing education courses, online resources, and hands-on training to ensure proper ultrasound techniques. Repro Scan’s core mission remains focused on providing practical, user-friendly ultrasound solutions for large animal veterinarians. By understanding customer needs and maintaining an agricultural background among their staff, they continue to innovate and support the livestock industry with cutting-edge diagnostic technologies.
